Bouldering Gym Review – Da Nang

I recently popped into Danang climbing gym, which is a bouldering only gym located in the Hải Châ district of Da Nang. The facility is relatively new, having only opening up in April 2023. Unlike Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang currently only has one indoor bouldering centre making it a must-visit for those bouldering enthusiasts travelling to Da Nang.

Facilities at Danang climbing gym

Danang climbing gym consists of a single medium-sized room with a reception and seating area running parallel to the climbing floor. At the back of the gym, there are male and female bathrooms that can be used to change into your climbing gear. The gym is kept cool by two large air conditioners placed at either side of the room. There is also plenty of space available at the front of the gym to park motorbikes/scooters.

Route difficulty level / layout

There is a good variety of routes suitable for beginner to advanced climbers. Difficulty levels at the gym range from V0 to V8. The vast majority of holds are crimps although some lower-level routes, which feature jugs.

In terms of problem quality, there were routes that required interesting movements along with some dynamic sections. As a casual climber I found many of the routes quite difficult and I felt that a number of lower level routes (V1 – V3’s) could be graded higher.

The route layout can be fairly tricky to wrap your head around at first and in my opinion the start and end points could be marked more clearly. Additionally, due to heavy chalk use some of the holds have blended together and making it slightly difficult to identify the exact route.

Climbing walls

Although the space is relatively small, it’s used efficiently, with a good range of climbing walls at various angles. There are several vertical walls and a decent selection of overhangs at different angles and even a traverse section.

Slight angled wall the other side

Atmosphere

During my visit, the gym was fairly quiet, with only one other group of climbers. The gym offers a relaxed atmosphere, so you should have plenty of time to work on problems at your leisure. I was lucky enough to chat with the owner, who was incredibly welcoming and eager to provide advice on any problems I had difficulty with.

Best time to visit Danang climbing gym

According to the owner, the busiest times are between 6 pm and 8 pm, however the gym is never packed so space issues aren’t likely to be a problem during your visit.

Final thoughts

Danang climbing gym is an excellent bouldering only gym, which is definitely worth a visit if you are passing through Da Nang regardless of your climbing level. Furthermore, for those who are living in Da Nang due to the gym’s convenient location, reasonable price for membership, relaxed atmosphere and good selection of challenging routes, it makes it a perfect location for those seeking their next bouldering gym to call home.
